English Foundations

English Foundations combines traditional ESL instruction with the discussion-based teaching style practiced in most American English courses. This class focuses on building students’ core grammar and vocabulary skills in addition to boosting reading comprehension, writing, and speaking abilities. Students read and discuss American literature, including poetry and short stories often assigned in middle and high school English classes. Students will learn to identify and analyze a text’s style, tone, and theme; to defend their arguments with textual evidence; and to articulate their ideas in writing and in class discussions. Upon completion of this course, students will be equipped with the preliminary skills to be successful critical readers and writers in a U.S. high school English course.
